01 / Her story
PROFILE OF VERA JAMES
On the 12th day of August 1932, a daughter was born to the late Joseph and Victoria Williams of Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands and they named her Alveria Helene Williams.
Vera, as she was commonly called from a young child was a loving, outspoken and caring person. She was the apple of their eye.
Vera received her education at the Providenciales primary school, and shortly after completing school, she migrated to Grand Turk. She was the proud mother of two children, Lillian and John. Vera loved her children and did everything possible to make them happy.
Later in life she met and married Leroy James, who predeceased her and she was left to strive for a better way of life for her two children. Vera was employed at the government’s radio station for several years. In the early 1980s she was employed as a chef at the Kittina Hotel. Here her acts of kindness were well displayed, she was loved by all who came in contact with her.
The owners were so pleased with her services that they later took her to Miami, Florida to work with them as caretaker of their home. On her visits home from Florida she would visit her long-loved, best friend Audrey and would spend hours expressing her love for her job and the entire Fennimore family.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a member of the Benevolent Savings Association and a member of the great Salem Baptist Church.
Vera took ill; her illness was short, and she died at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
